Introduction –
Meningomyelocele is a kind of spina bifida. Spina bifida is a
birth imperfection in which the spinal trench and the spine don't close before
the child is conceived. This kind of birth deformity is likewise called a
neural tube imperfection. The spinal rope and the meninges (the tissue that
covers the spinal string) may really distend through the youngster's back. At
times that skin covers the spinal rope and meninges, it might likewise stick
through the skin.
A meningomyelocele (also
called myelomeningocele or spina bifida) is a herniation of the meninges and
spinal cord through a spinal defect. It is a form of open spinal dysraphism
resulting from a neural tube defect (NTD) involving failed closure of the
neural tube. Embryologically, failure of primary neurulation most often occurs
in the posterior neuropore, resulting in lumbosacral region defects. The
etiology is multifactorial, and reduced folic acid is associated with the
condition. Despite recommendations for folic acid fortification and
supplementation, the incidence of meningomyelocele is 3.4 per 10 000 live
births in the United States. Marked increases of meningomyelocele and spina
bifida have been seen in Ethiopia due to lack of folic acid.
Spina
bifida most ordinarily happens in three structures:
• Spina bifida mysterious
• Meningoceles
• Meningomyelocele

Diagnoses-
Your baby will usually require about two weeks of recovery time in
the hospital after surgery. Doctors will administer antibiotics to prevent
infection. Additional tests, such as MRIs or ultrasounds, may be performed to
ensure that the surgery site is healing normally. These tests can detect any
swelling or fluid buildup (hydrocephalus) that
may develop after the defect is repaired. Nurses will position the baby so that
baby lies on the stomach in order to avoid putting pressure on the wound.
Results will depend on the amount of damage done to the baby’s
spinal nerves. Since meningocele typically doesn’t damage any of the neural
tissues, surgery usually has excellent results. Babies rarely have any lasting
disabilities or brain, nerve, or muscle problems caused by a meningocele.
